Today, I have a review of a product which I recently added to my skincare routine and am absolutely LOVING. The Hada Labo Shirojyun lotion* is basically what my skincare dreams are made of…

Hada Labo Lotion Review

I really couldn’t imagine my routine without this product. While the product is labelled a lotion, it’s not the same as a lotion in the Western sense – this product is meant to be applied after cleansing, and before essence/moisturiser. It’s basically a toner, however unlike Western toners, it is meant to be applied by patting all over the face with your hands, instead of applied with a cotton pad. This video from Hada Labo perfectly explains how to apply all of the brand’s lotion products.

After a while, I realized that I began to apply all of my skincare like thisโ€”not just the Hada Labo Lotions. In my opinion, it just feels better to pat skincare products in, rather than just rubbing them around. Who is with me on this?!

Some of you may be more familiar to this product’s more famous sibling, the Hada Labo Premium lotion.  I chose the Shirojyun lotion because it contains additional ingredients more relevant to addressing my skin issue of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). It’s also known as the Arbutin/Albutin line in Japan.

This Hada Labo Lotion contains Arbutin and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (a form of Vitamin C), two ingredients that are extremely effective in reducing the appearance of PIH and preventing more from appearing. A huge selling point of most of Hada Labo products is the use of multiple forms of hyaluronic acid, an extremely effective humectant ingredient.

Like all Hada Labo Lotions, the Hada Labo Shirojyun Lotion comes in a generous 170ml cylindrical bottle with a label pretty much entirely in Japanese – the only English parts are the ‘Shirojyun’ and ‘Made in Japan’. The packaging is simple but effective. The product itself is a milky fluid with a very runny, watery consistency. It doesn’t feel slimy or heavy when applied; it plumps and hydrates my skin immediately.

The eBay listing describes this as the “Light” version of this item, with a “Moist” type for drier skin. It was hard tracking down the full ingredients list in English of this product, but I am fairly certain this is it:

Hada Labo Shirojyun Lotion Ingredients

Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Arbutin, Sorbitol, PPG-10 Methyl Glucose Ether, Methylparaben, Disodium Succinate, Styrene/VP Copolymer, Sodium Hyaluronate, Succinic Acid, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid.

If someone has any corrections, please let me know! I love how this stuff is packed with moisturising ingredients and no added fragrance or plant extracts; it only contains what’s needed. I really like this aspect of the product – I feel like too many skincare brands out there add fragrance or plant extracts to products when they serve no purpose, and may even cause skin irritation in some people. Another beneficial aspect of this product is the pH. It’s pretty much bang on 5 – an ideal pH for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.

I bought this to address my issues of visible dry skin flakes and PIH. It’s too soon to really say if it’s working on my PIH, but I can definitely attest to it’s amazing hydrating capacity. I use it in the evening after applying my Differin 0.1%, and before my Benton Snail Bee Essence. The difference that this product has made is just astounding – I don’t have any more visible skin flakes, and my skin feels so plump, soft and hydrated all the time.

The flakes were always most visible after washing my face, but now I have hardly any. I also used to experience a slight feeling of dryness after washing my face, but after using this for a few weeks, that feeling has now completely disappeared. My skin does seem a little brighter and more glowy somehow, but I’m attributing this to the increased hydration. It’s just too early (in my opinion) to expect results like that; most active ingredients need at least 6 weeks of consistent use to see changes in skin tone.

I absolutely love this product and will definitely be repurchasing. Have you tried any Hada Labo products?

  1. Whoops forgot to reply xD

I prefer the scent of the Etude House Wonder Pore Cleanser but use both as they both have a similar formula.

Moisturiser is sitting unloved as I have better smelling cleansers. It doesn't smell bad, but not good either. Has a good formula that provides a good amount of moisture.

Benton essence I am using every night, not sure if it is making a difference though ^^

  2. Hello, may i ask if there is an other variant of hadalabo shirojyun? I just notice that your bottle has a yellow text at the bottom, while mine is pink. I was just kinda confused. Looking forward to your response thanks. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  3. Hi Charina! Apparently there is a version of the toner that is a 'moist' version, however I think the text is red. How large is your bottle? I think you have the Shirojyun Milk, which is a thicker emulsion than this. I have it too, it's a favorite of mine ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Yes, i see. I think i have the milk emulsion. ๐Ÿ‘ Thank you it helps a lot, I just use it as is, maybe next time i'll use it with the shirojyun lotion to boost its whitening effect. ๐Ÿ˜Š
