Today’s review is on a drugstore clay mask which I’ve really been enjoying using lately! L’Oreal recently launched three new clay masks, and I’ve got the charcoal one here to review.

There was a lot of hype around the release of these masks in NZ, especially the charcoal one as it drew so many comparisons to the super luxe Glam Glow Supermud mask. Unfortunately, I don’t have that to compare it to, but I’m sure I’ll still be impressed by the L’Oreal Pure Clay Charcoal mask.

What are the Benefits of a Charcoal Clay Mask?

Charcoal masks have carved out a significant niche in the skincare world, thanks to their powerful detoxifying properties. Activated charcoal is known for its ability to draw out impurities, dirt, and oil from the pores. It is a go-to ingredient for those looking to achieve a clearer, more refined complexion – ie, me!

When combined with clay, these benefits are amplified. Clay, with its natural absorbent qualities, works alongside charcoal to remove excess oil and combat acne, providing a deeper cleanse.

This dynamic duo leaves the skin feeling refreshed and purified, with a smoother, more matte finish.

The inclusion of clay in a charcoal mask not only enhances the detoxifying effect but also helps in tightening pores and improving skin texture, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of skin types – but especially for oily skin! That’s why this mask contains not just clay, but charcoal too – it’ll help make skin feel more refined and clearer after use.

L’Oreal Pure Clay Mask Review

""

The first thing I notice on opening is that it’s scented – I don’t know how to describe it, but it reminds me of how spas smell. It’s that sort of floral, clean scent. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with a spatula but at least it comes with an inner lid to prevent the product from drying out.

It’s very smooth and easy to apply, but it definitely has a bit of a tingle on the skin. I do use prescription tretinoin which makes my skin more sensitive, so that could be why. I wouldn’t describe it as painful, but there’s a definite tingle on application. As usual, I used this right after cleansing, but before any other skincare products. That’s the best way to use masks, btw!

What I really love about this mask is that it changes colours as it dries and very strongly oil spots, which is soooooo satisfying to see! It spots strongly around my nose/t-zone and also draws out fluid from recent pimples, helping to dry them out. It does dry into a very stiff mask which easily rinses off with water.

"Clay

L’Oreal Pure Clay Mask vs. Innisfree Volcanic Pore Clay Mask

These are both clay masks that I really enjoy in my skincare routine – but which is better? By comparison, when appling, the Innisfree Jeju Mask doesn’t get so tight. It doesn’t visibly oil spot either, and still leaves skin feeling equally as shine-fresh and refined.

If I had to pick between the two, my choice would only be the Innisfree since it doesn’t feel as taut on the skin while drying – but that’s really splitting hairs!

Final Points

My skin always feels amazing and smooth after this clay mask, but it also feels very dry – moisture is definitely needed ASAP after using this! Despite that, I really enjoy using this mask once a week to help dry up any excess oil in my pores and lingering pimples – I rate this a 5/5!
